Provocative Devotion: Psalm 8

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

I can never forget stepping off a bus after midnight in the middle of nowhere in Swaziland. The nearest town was miles away and the nearest large city over an hours drive. Electricity was sparse in that part of the world resulting in little to no ambient light to wash out the stars. It was a clear moonless night yet we could see to walk in that dark because of the brilliance of the stars above. For the first time ever I truly understood what was meant by the name The Milky Way. The stars were so dense in a swatch across the heavens that it looked is if some giant hand had splashed a glass of milk from horizon to horizon. It stood in awe of the beauty and glory of what God had made.

Like David marveling at the heavens, I felt small and insignificant. But only for a moment. In the midst of the wonder of all God has created is the even greater wonder that God has made humanity as the crowning jewel of His creation. The stars are beautiful. The planets are stunning. The beasts of the field, air, and sea, are bewildering in their variety and beauty and strangeness. Yet it is only we human beings who have been given the dignity of being made in God’s image. Who am I that God is mindful of me? I am a man created in His image, to be His representative to the world. To care for all He has created so that His glory continues to shine. If I am to care for, be steward over, the rest of creation then how much more should I care for the crowning jewel? How much more should I care for those made in the image of the creator of the cosmos? What is man that God is mindful? We are those made in His image. We are those for whom Christ died. Yes I will worship the Lord in the splendor of all He has created and I will worship Him by loving and caring for those He created in His image.
